Peter Collins has been an active bass trombonist in southern Ontario for over 15 years playing with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and Orchestra London Canada. During that time he has also played with many other orchestras including the Windsor Symphony, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Brantford Symphony, National Ballet Orchestra and the Canadian Opera Company.
In addition to a wide range of experience in the modern world of bass trombone Peter also has substantial experience with early music playing bass sackbut. He has played regularly with the Toronto Consort, Tafelmusik, Opera Atelier as well as Apollo's Fire: The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra and Santa Fe Pro Musica. He can be heard on several discs including the Monteverdi Vespers, Praetorius Christmas Vespers and Orfeo with Apollo's Fire and the Praetorius Christmas Vespers with Toronto Consort.
Peter studied with Ted Griffith at McGill University and then continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music with Murray Crewe. He also studied with Joe Alessi of the New York Philharmonic after being awarded a grant from the Brantford Regional Arts Council. His other teachers have included Nick Atkinson of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Wim Becu and Charles Toet of Concerto Palatino, Abbie Conant, Mogens Andresen, Edward Kleinhammer, Charlie Vernon and Peter Sullivan.
When not in rehearsals or concerts Peter can be found behind a camera enjoying photography, in front of a computer restoring damaged photos or in the packaging area at Grand River Brewing. He also enjoys his life at home with his wife, two daughters and two labrador retrievers.
